Utah increases fishing limits at reservoirs affected by drought and infrastructure projects
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has issued emergency fishing regulation changes at seven reservoirs and ponds across the state in response to declining water levels caused by ongoing drought and infrastructure construction.
Effective immediately, the temporary changes increase daily harvest limits and, at several locations, allow spearfishing to encourage anglers to harvest fish that could otherwise be lost as water levels continue to drop.
The affected waterbodies include Minersville, Otter Creek, Pineview, Red Creek and Vernon reservoirs, along with Canyon View Park Pond and Palisade Reservoir. Several sites are being drawn down for dam repairs, dredging or drinking water infrastructure projects, while others are experiencing significant declines due to persistent drought conditions.
According to DWR, Palisade Reservoir and Red Creek Reservoir are being drained for dam construction and maintenance projects, while Pineview Reservoir is being lowered to accommodate construction of a new drinking water pipeline for Ogden City. Drought-related water losses prompted emergency measures at Minersville, Otter Creek and Vernon reservoirs.
Officials said increasing harvest limits helps reduce fish mortality as shrinking water volumes place additional stress on aquatic ecosystems. The temporary regulations vary by waterbody and will remain in effect through Oct. 1 or Dec. 31, depending on the location.
