Flood Control Improvements Underway in Cedar Falls, Iowa

The long anticipated flood control improvements will raise the downtown levee by 2 to 3 ft

Construction has started on flood control improvements in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The plan involves removing a high-maintenance retaining wall and raising the downtown Cedar Falls flood control levee by 2 to 3 ft.

According to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, the project has been developing for five years and state funding was secured in 2014. Raising the flood control levee in the downtown district was a response to record flood flows in 2008 where flood waters nearly overtopped the pre-existing levee and current construction is expected to conclude during this construction season.

“The snows that moved in last week kind of shut things down, but they’re working as they can as the weather cooperates,” City Engineer Jon Resler said regarding issues of construction during this season.
