The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) proposed a study that would examine 22 watersheds in the Houston region. The study is being called the Metropolitan Houston Regional Watershed Assessment and still requires approval by Congress before moving forward. If approved, the USACE would evaluate the rainfall trends and flood plan for the region, ultimately providing recommendations for improved flood control managements systems.

The study would analyze how storm water moves from rooftops to the Galveston Bay, according to the Houston Chronicle. Over a period of three years and $3 million, the USACE would then provide recommendations for the Houston area on flood control and disaster prevention strategies. Based off of these recommendations, the projects could become eligible for federal aid.

“You create a smarter plan with the regional watershed assessment,” said Edmond Russo, deputy district engineer for Programs and Project Management of the USACE. “What do we want to look at 10, 15, 20 years later in terms of sustainable flood risk management?”
