Gannett Fleming Delivers Regional Wastewater Pretreatment Facility
Gannett Fleming recently completed engineering and construction for the $40 million R. Steven Biggs Regional Wastewater Pretreatment Facility (WWPTF) in Clayton, N.C. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 10 celebrated the innovation and success of the state-of-the-art facility with community leaders and global health care company, Novo Nordisk.
Novo Nordisk selected Gannett Fleming to provide turnkey project delivery services for development of the 8-acre site. The team utilized a phased engineer-procure-construct (EPC) delivery approach to meet the 17-month schedule requirement in alignment with Novo Nordisk’s $2 billion Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing facility.
Services included design, permitting, procurement, and construction installation for multiple facilities, numerous treatment tanks, as well as solids handling and support equipment. The facility employs a fully automated process control system with various sensors integrated. In addition, it features 100% equipment redundancy to protect against equipment failure and ensure optimal treatment to meet wastewater discharge limits.
“This pretreatment facility is a critical public infrastructure resource for growth in Clayton, Johnson County, and the region,” said David Broughton, Gannett Fleming project management director. “With the ability to treat 450,000 gal of waste per day and with more than 5.4 million gal of total tank volume, the WWPTF not only meets the needs of Novo Nordisk but can be expanded to serve as a shared infrastructure asset to future industrial businesses in the region.”
