Water Tech Leader Delivers Lecture on Global Food and Water Supplies
Dr. James L. Barnard, Ph.D and a Global Practice and Technology Leader in Black and Veatch’s water business, has spent his career researching, developing and improving processing for treating water and wastewater. One of his most acclaimed accomplishments is the development and implementation of the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process that provides a chemical-free solution to removing nutrients from used water. Barnard’s BNR process is used in hundreds, if not thousands, of facilities across North America, Europe and Africa.
Barnard received an Honorary Doctorate from Iowa State University’s (ISU) College of Engineering. Barnard was recognized for his work that revolutionized the water treatment industry.
Before the ceremony, Barnard delivered the Vlasta Klima Balloun Lecture to ISU students and faculty. During his address, Barnard outlined the effects of population growth on food, water and nutrient cycles and why these cycles must be restored. Barnard stated that limited phosphorus supplies are being used at an unsustainable rate. Through the use of his BNR process water treatment facilities can recover this valuable and essential nutrient.
Barnard has received numerous industry awards and recognitions throughout his career. Notable awards include Singapore’s prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize and the Koch/Imhoff Award from the International Water Association. A native of South Africa, Barnard also holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Johannesburg.
