Using Erosion Control BMPs on Roadway Projects

Oct. 1, 2015

Your erosion control BMPs meet regulation, BUT are they practical? Join Jerald Fifield, Ph.D., PH, CPESC, CISEC and Tina Wills, PE, CISEC, CPESC for the fourth installment of our advanced Sediment and Erosion Control for Roadway Projects Master Class Series, Using Erosion Control BMPs on Roadway Projects, exploring the available erosion control methods and diversion structures, as well as how to develop seed mixtures, calculate fertilizer rates, and evaluate TRMs in drainage channels on roadway sites.

This webinar will be available live on Wednesday, Dec. 2nd,  11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PST / 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. EST, and available on-demand after the live event. Register for the event by clicking the button below.Whenever possible, designers and reviewers must identify the timely use of erosion control practices on roadway projects to ensure the generation of sediment is minimized in order to minimize the discharge. However, while erosion control practices are imperative, construction practicality must also exist.

Working through Fifield’s best-selling Designing and Reviewing Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plans (3rd ed.), this fourth module of our Sediment and Erosion Control for Roadway Projects Master Class Series explores the erosion control methods and diversion structures (e.g., slope drains) available to contractors and their limitations, as well as how to develop seed mixtures, calculate fertilizer rates, and evaluate TRMs in drainage channels. Within this discussion, Fifield and Wills discuss how to develop seed mixtures for local climate conditions, what is necessary to calculate fertilizer application rates, the process of reviewing types of mulches, etc. Fifield and Wills also discuss how the use of shear stress values are necessary to select a TRM for drainage channels, as well as reviewing other erosion control practices available to designer, reviewers, and contractors.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Understand the various erosion control methods available to contractors.
  • Identify the limitations of erosion control BMPs.
  • Understand how to develop seed mixtures and calculate fertilizer rates.
  • Evaluate the use of TRMs in drainage channels.
