Christmas Trees Find New Life in Erosion Control
Post-holiday season, Christmas trees have been recycled throughout the U.S. Many cities and towns are turning Christmas trees into mulch for distribution throughout public lands and the community.
Bill Ulfeder, the executive director of The Nature Conservancy said to the New York Times, “That’s actually a really nice wildlife erosion control, and it’s an organic nutrient supply to our parks.” The mulch is being used to protect trails and public lands as well as being distributed to communities.
Additionally, Christmas trees are being used, like after Hurricane Sandy, to rebuild and support sand dunes and provide protection from erosion. This practice is becoming more common along the east coast in states such as New York and New Jersey.
