Longmont, Colo., Receives Grant for Sediment Removal
Longmont, Colo., was awarded a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for sediment removal and erosion repair along Left Hand Creek. The sediment buildup occurred after a heavy round of spring runoff in 2015, which resulted in reduced flood control and an underpass blockage. Similar damage occurred in a 2013 flood that led to erosion of Left Hand Creek and required an additional cleanup project.
The cleanup project, slated to begin the week of Jan. 22, will remove 30,000 cu yards of sediment and repair the creek’s channel. Beyond the grant, the city plans to conduct a study on future ways to mitigate sediment deposits, according to local news source Times Call. The project is expected to take three months to complete and cost a total of $886,700.
