Professional Certifications

A number of certifications are available for professionals in the erosion and sediment control industry, some of them new within the last few years. For more information on the certifications described below, as well as for training and exam dates for CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI, CMS4S, and CISEC, please visit the organizations’ Web sites, listed below.

Four of the following certifications—CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI, and CMS4S—are available through EnviroCert International Inc. Applicants for these designations can obtain certification through a process of peer review and a written examinations. CPESC
The Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) designation identifies specialists who have met established standards of expertise, experience, and knowledge in the field of erosion and sediment control.

The Certified Professional in Storm Water Quality (CPSWQ) designation identifies those who have met established standards for stormwater management.

CESSWI
The Certified Erosion, Sediment, and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI) designation identifies qualified technicians and inspectors with construction and post-construction inspection skills.

CMS4S
The Certified Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Specialist (CMS4S) designation identifies specialists who are qualified to manage or coordinate nationally consistent EPA NPDES MS4 programs.

CISEC
The Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC) designation identifies those who demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in the principles and practices of sediment and erosion control and their applicability to development of discharge permit documents; skills to observe onsite and offsite conditions that impact the quality of stormwater discharges from active construction sites; ability to inspect installed best management practices and their ongoing maintenance; and ability to communicate and report on their inspections.

CCIS
The Certified Compliance Inspector of Stormwater (CCIS) 6-hour class is designed to educate and certify municipal inspectors and jobsite stormwater managers to properly set up, maintain, and inspect a site for stormwater compliance.
 
CPSWPPP
The Certified Preparer of SWPPP (CPSWPPP) 8-hour class is designed to educate and certify individuals to prepare stormwater pollution prevention plans. A professional certified as a CPSWPPP is also certified to implement and inspect sites for stormwater compliance.

Certification in Erosion and Sediment Control
This certification, offered through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, provides an independent evaluation of technical knowledge and experience. The certification is designed for engineering technicians engaged in all phases of erosion and sediment control work. Areas covered include knowledge of soils, the erosion process, small watershed hydrology, hydraulics of basic water control structures, sedimentation process, principles of erosion and sediment control, construction practices and inspection, and field investigation reports. There are four levels of certification. Applicants must meet requirements for education and experience and pass a written exam.

Certification programs and instruction specific to an agency, company, or organization are provided through ABC’s of BMP’s LLC. These programs can help in meeting the requirements of an ordinance, consent order, or company goals.
