Dustex, a lignin-based road binder from Borregaard LignoTec, has earned the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product Label, with 100% biobased content.

Lignin is the natural binder of wood fibers in trees. In Dustex, lignin helps to effectively bind together soil particles on unpaved roads. It reduces dust and holds together the aggregate, reducing maintenance costs and increasing road safety. Dustex can replace petrochemical alternatives for dust suppression and reduces the need for watering by up to 90%.

“Borregaard takes pride in being able to offer sustainable and environmentally friendly products with a low carbon footprint to displace oil-based products in a variety of applications including dust control. This label allows us to showcase these benefits and highlight that our product is 100 percent biobased,” says Steve Dickman, business director dust solutions at Borregaard.

Third-party verification for a product’s biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred Program. One of the goals of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the development, purchase, and use of biobased products.

The USDA Certified Biobased Product label displays a product's biobased content, which is the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks. Biobased products have played an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate global climate change.

"We applaud Borregaard for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label. Products from Borregaard are contributing to an ever-expanding marketplace that adds value to renewable agriculture commodities, creates jobs in rural communities, and decreases our reliance on petroleum," says Kate Lewis at the USDA BioPreferred Program. The BioPreferred Program is a USDA-led initiative that assists in the development and expansion of markets for biobased products. The BioPreferred Program has two initiatives to increase the purchase and use of biobased products: mandatory purchasing requirements for Federal Agencies and Federal contractors and voluntary product certification and labeling.
