Infocast's Water Management for Mining Summit to Address Drought-Related Issues
Infocast is prepared to host its Water Management for Mining event in Denver, Colo. Sept. 12 to 13, 2012. With ongoing drought in the United States, the summit will be critical to companies involved directly, or even peripherally, in the mining industry.
According to a July news release, the Washington Department of Ecology issued a penalty of $395,000 to Crown Resources Corp. for water quality violations at the Buckhorn Mountain gold mine near Chesaw in Okanogan County, Wash. Such a move represents the urgency and importance placed in the quality control of water used in mining operations, especially in times when water is scarce.
“We want to make it clear that Crown must operate the mine in a way that protects water quality as required in their discharge permit and by state law,” said Kelly Susewind, Ecology’s water quality program manager in Olympia. “The mine is important to the economy of the area. Water quality is important to its future as well. We believe both can be maintained.”
Due to the capital intensity of mine operations, vigorous regulations and the need for environmental sustainability, effective water management strategies are needed to ensure overall operational efficiency and long-term cost reductions. Companies are driven to increase efforts in recycling and reusing of water, in addition to reducing water usage altogether where possible. The companies are also required to stay up-to-date on the new technologies being created in order to fulfill their obligations.
The Water Management for Mining event is an opportunity for professionals and stakeholders to meet, network, discuss issues and brainstorm solutions for effective water management in the mining industry.
The Summit will feature a faculty of industry players from top companies, including AECOM, ARCADIS, Cardno ENTRIX, CH2M Hill, EPA (invited), Halliburton Energy Services, HATCH Water, Rare Element Resources, St. Cloud Mining Co., Stewart Environmental Consultants, Veolia Water, Water Remediation Technology LLC and more.
