Hyderabad Metro Rail Plans 300 Rainwater Harvesting Structures

Each water reuse structure will be able to hold 5,000 liters of water

Larsen and Toubro Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) announced plans to build a dual-purpose rainwater harvesting system to recharge groundwater levels and reduce flooding along low-lying roads in Hyderabad, India. HMRL will construct 300 rainwater harvesting structures overall.

100 of the water reuse structures will be created with the injection of borewells at the edges of the road and 200 without injection borewells. Each rainwater harvesting structure will be able to hold 5,000 liters of water. Each will be 14 ft long, 8 ft wide and 8 ft deep, with two layers of broken granite with coarse sand and walled off with concrete so that cars may still drive over them.

Hyderabad Municipal Administration Minister K. T. Rama Roa has made rainwater harvesting a priority in the city, including requiring new construction to implement the water reuse strategy and building a public rainwater harvesting theme park. HMRL already has begun identifying low-lying areas where water accumulates for the water reuse structures.
