Seven construction management students at Montana Technological University have graduated with Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) certification, giving them a professional credential that is typically earned after entering the construction industry.

The certification, which is required in Montana for professionals preparing and administering stormwater permits on construction projects disturbing more than one acre, was incorporated into the students' senior capstone course by Visiting Professor of Practice Randi J. Rognlie. After becoming a certified instructor and receiving state approval, Rognlie developed the course so students could complete the required training and certification exam at no cost.

As part of the capstone project, students worked in teams to develop stormwater pollution prevention plans, present their findings and prepare final reports. Their projects will also be featured at Techxpo, the university's annual student design and research exhibition.

SWPPPs are a key component of construction stormwater compliance, outlining erosion and sediment control practices that minimize runoff and protect nearby waterways during land-disturbing activities. By earning the certification before graduation, students are qualified to prepare and administer stormwater permits immediately upon entering the workforce.
