Shasta College Hosts International Erosion Control Summit
Shasta College will host its third Erosion Control BMP Summit May 3 and 4, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Shasta College Erosion Control Training Facility (ECTF) and Farm.
The ECTF’s 5-acre site mimics a construction site and is also the training ground for the heavy equipment operations classes at Shasta College.
The workshop—a partnership between Shasta College, Doing Water Matters for Jobs and the Economy, Sacramento Watershed Action Group (SWAG), Western Chapter Intl. Erosion Control Assn. and the North/Far North Consortium—has gained international participation of industry partners from France and the Marianas Islands.
John McCullah, Shasta College instructor, with help from staff and students, will present and demonstrate the most effective BMPs for construction storm water protection. Special guest presenter will be Eric Berntsen, formerly with the California State Water Board. Berntsen has experience with municipal MS4 regulations and knowledge of hydro-modification.
The two-day workshop is designed for people of beginning, intermediate or advanced erosion control experience. It will be extremely beneficial for Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plant (SWPPP) developers, engineers, construction personnel, site inspectors, landscape contractors, and other water-quality professionals.
The workshop’s training is focused on practical, in-the-field implementation and inspection of BMPs. Attendees will spend time both in the classroom and out in the field, spraying on hydro-mulch or helping to anchor turf reinforced mat (TRM) or rolled erosion control products. There will also be a product exhibition, with manufacturers, developers, and distributors of erosion and sediment control products from around the world. Many products will be demonstrated in the field and exhibit hall.
Attendees can network with professionals working in the erosion control field. Shasta College students who are actively receiving training in their curriculum will be on hand, as well.
Contractors and installers will be given tips to save money. Shasta College has constructed drainage ways to learn about TRMs, state-of-the-art site grading and effective soil surface preparation BMPs.
Registration is group rates are available. Discounts will be given to state, federal and local agencies with groups of five or more and early registration. Scholarships are also available to small businesses involved in Erosion Control. Registration includes breakfast and lunch for both days.
