NCSPA Announces Project of the Year Winners
Chandler, Ariz., played host to the 2013 National Corrugated Steel Pipe Assn.'s (NCSPA) Annual Meeting. The meeting’s kicked off Sunday evening when President Pat Collings of Lane Enterprises recognized the Safety Award winners from the previous year. Special recognition this year was given to the Contech Engineered Solutions plants in North Little Rock, AR; Port Allen, LA; and Palmer, MA for 5000+ days without a worktime accident. Safety Awards recognizing plants with 3000-4999 days and 1000-2999 days without a worktime accident also were given.
This year, the NCSPA Outstanding Projects of the Year Awards made their rookie debut with five categories of solutions eligible for entry - DOT Projects, Detention/Retention Projects, Rehabilitation Projects, Structural Plate Projects and Corrugated Steel Pipe and Arch Projects. Three guest judges, including one from Storm Water Solutions, were solicited to review, rank and select the winners of each category.

- DOT Project of the Year: True North Steel (Minnesota State Highway 210)
- Structural Plate Project of the Year: Lane Enterprises (Coalfields Expressway)
- Corrugated Steel Pipe and Pipe Arch Project of the Year: Metal Culverts (Southwestern Illinois College Parking Lot Expansion)
- Retention/Detention Project of the Year: Southeast Culvert (University of West Georgia Cisterns)
- Rehabilitation Project of the Year: Contech Engineered Solutions (I-94 Mitchell Interchange Reline)
The meeting’s general sessions were highlighted by two informational speakers, Robert Wills, vice president, construction market development with the Steel Market Development Institute, a business Unit of AISI. He provided insight into how the Steel Market Development Institute along with AISI, the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance and the NCSPA can work together to promote the use of steel. Cliff Brewis, senior director editorial operations of McGraw-Hill Construction discussed the trends into the future of the steel market on the whole economy and sector-by–sector analysis.
