Design firm Stantec has been appointed to design the new Wrangle Pumping Station in East Lincolnshire, England, after helping the Drainage Board acquire full funding for the station.

The pumping station will provide flood protection for a catchment area of approximately 2,169ha, containing approximately 117 residential properties and 26 commercial properties that would otherwise be at risk. The majority of the catchment is high grade arable land and of national importance in terms of food production.

Stantec was initially appointed to provide feasibility work to consider the potential replacement of the existing Wrangle Pumping Station. This led to the preparation of a Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management Grant-in-Aid funding application, which was successful in obtaining full project funding to the estimated value of £3.87 million ($4.86 million USD). Approval was granted in March 2022.

Subsequently, Stantec has completed the outline design for the proposed pumping station. The pumping station proposes to use an innovative type of land drainage pump considered by the Environment Agency as best in class for promoting eel passage and far more efficient and sustainable than traditional pumps.

We look forward to strengthening our relationship with W4IDB and indeed other internal drainage boards associated with the Water Management Alliance (WMA),” said Simon Darch, project director at Stantec, “showing how we can work with clients to achieve funding support for projects that would otherwise be unfeasible.”

“This is an excellent result for the Board, on the confirmation of DEFRA Flood Risk Grant in Aid for Wrangle Pumping Station project,” said Ed Johnson, chief engineer of the Witham Fourth District Internal Drainage Board. “When we originally put the pumping station forward for grant aid, our goal was to obtain enough funding for a refurbishment. We are delighted that Stantec’s hard work has obtained us full funding for a new replacement pumping station.”

Following this work and previous water level management schemes delivered on behalf of W4IDB, W4IDB has appointed Stantec to carry out a feasibility study on the replacement of Benington and Leverton pumping stations to the south of Wrangle and has signed up to the SCAPE Perfect Circle Framework.
